What is the proper placement of smoke detectors in a home?

In a ranch-style home, one smoke detector should be placed in the hall outside the bedrooms and one at the bottom of the stairway in the lower level.

In a two story home, one smoke detector should be installed on each floor. On the second floor, place one in the hallway outside the bedrooms, on the first floor position a detector in a central location (preferably a hallway), and finally one at the bottom of the stairway in the basement.
